The First 15

Friday November 5, 2021

by First Methodist Mansfield

Today is Friday, November 5, and this week we are exploring Jesus’s teaching on the spiritual practice of generosity and how it transforms our thinking.

Opening Prayer

As I enter into prayer, I pause to be still. I breathe slowly and recenter my scattered thoughts upon the presence of God.

Pause and Pray

Holy Spirit, come guide me to rest in these moments of stillness with you. Amen.

Scripture Reading

I choose to offer my thanks to God, joining with the ancient praise of all God’s people in the words of Psalm 56.

I am under vows to you, my God;
I will present my thank offerings to you.
For you have delivered me from death
and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life. Psalm 56:12-13 NIV

Pause and Pray

Jesus truly is the most amazing teacher I have ever known. He sits on the slope of a mountainside and points to what is nearby to help me learn and remember his teaching. He says,

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” – Matthew 6:28-32 NIV

Reflection

I think from this day forward, each time I see a beautiful field of flowers thriving on their own, I will remember how Jesus taught me to shift my way of thinking about what I truly need. He said, “What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving.” (v. 30 MSG)

Ask: What else do I hear Jesus emphasize in this teaching?

Pause and Pray

Lord, help me examine my attitudes and thoughts as I slowly read Jesus’s words once again.

Ask: What image, word or phrase stood out to me this time as I listened to Jesus?

Pause and Pray

Lord, help me look inward and recognize how preoccupied I have become with storing up things. Change my way of thinking so that I can see the world the way Jesus saw it, as the kingdom of God, and I can live my life the way Jesus lived his, in gratitude and generosity. Amen.

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. – Acts 4:32

Closing Prayer

Father, prepare me to live this day being faithful to you in every way. Jesus, help me serve others with your compassion and grace. Spirit, transform my inner thoughts and motivations so that all I do, I do to please you. Amen.
