Opening Prayer

As I enter into this time of prayer and reflection, I pause to be still; to breathe slowly; to recenter my scattered senses upon the presence of God.

Lord, please help me to be still and listen for what you have to say to me in these quiet moments.

Scripture Reading

This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;

    ask for the ancient paths,

ask where the good way is, and walk in it,

and you will find rest for your souls.”

Jeremiah 6:16

Reflection

As each new year and each new day begins we stand at the crossroads of God’s magnificent possibilities.

I sincerely believe that while we are sleeping God speaks to our souls. God’s design for us to rest and “get a good night’s sleep” is the easiest spiritual practice of all. We simply give in to a deep sleep and God’s holy and restorative work begins in us.

But, most mornings we struggle to pay attention and remember how God has been present with us as we have slept. Unmindful and unprepared, we go out into the day grasping only a small portion of the goodness, beauty and truth God has shared with us.

  • What do you think God spoke to your soul while you were sleeping last night?
  • What do you think God wants your soul to remember today?

Closing Prayer

When you are finished with your time of reflection, close out this time with this prayer.

Lord, Make advent real in our hearts.
Never have we needed Your joy and peace more than now.
Thank You for the gift of Jesus, our Immanuel, the Word made flesh.

Lord, we need Your peace and joy. We know that peace on earth can only come when hearts find peace with You. You are still our Joy. You are still our Peace.  And we still celebrate You as Lord—this Christmas and always.
